They were discussing the question of "why do some people sacrifice themselves in order to help someone else? Shouldn't evolution mean that everyone is just out for themselves?"

Their special guest, brings up something called the "Price equation" by a guy named George Price http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_R._Price that created what I'm calling "an academic explanation of altruism" and as it relates to this show "Why people place a value on forgiving and assisting family members".

From what I understand, Price is saying that the reason we go out of our way to help family members, is because our genes drive us to activities that ensure that genes similar to ours (our relatives) go on.

Put another way: It isn't just that we want our genes to survive, it's that we want the genes that are the most similar to ours to survive as well. With the highest priority place on parents and siblings, and then lesser important are grandparents, cousins, etc.

So Kyle, the "illogic" of people saying "C'mon, it's your sister" but then they have no explanation as to why you should place this value on your sister more than other people, is because they don't realize it either. It's our genes that drive us to care about family, because our genes want to see themselves (or genes like themselves) continue.

Fun Fact: George Price tried to live a form of "super altruism" to strangers, which was repaid in betrayal, and he ended up committing suicide by cutting the artery in his throat with a pair of nail scissors.

Was his mistake that he tried to help strangers, while his own work proved that he should have been helping family.
